''Everything around you is beginning to fade. Darkness is forming a circle around you, and it's closing in on you. Everything is fading. We're no longer here. Now you're alone in the darkness, and the darkness begins to disappear.''

In many ways The Orphanage feels like an early prototype for the 'grief is the real horror' A24 horror style, though it incorporates its thematic content far more effectively than those more recent efforts.

    Hellraiser

    ★★

''I don't know what they promised you. Knowledge? Love? I sought pleasure. But all they have to give is pain. It's a trick. All of it.''

    Suicide.
    Hotel Rooms.
The dead body and the cheater.

    Pure aesthetics.
    Playful entertainment.

A half-sleeping odyssey through a field of imagery that's self-consciously devoid of deep meaning; the subconscious deliberately suppressed.

Structurally biographical, but stripped of all depth that would tie it exclusively to Cocteau, The Blood of a Poet is a shallow but universal treatise…
