oh Scream, how I love you more than you’ll ever know.

you’re still just as fun the 200th time as you were the first time. you explored new frontiers and, in doing so, absolutely changed the horror game. your opening scene is arguably the most iconic of all opening scenes. you and your stellar cast captivated us in unique and various ways. you provided us with a competent and formidable final girl amidst the sea of mediocre surviving characters. the…

    Halloween Ends

    ★★½

    So terribly conflicted.

On the one hand, I applaud it for taking risks and diverting from the predictable slasher/victim plot. On the other hand, the risks taken are simply atrocious and this is one of the rare cases where adhering to the conventional formula would’ve probably worked better.

I can see glimpses of the intended vision shining light through narrow cracks, but ultimately not enough light is escaping to allow the vision to come to fruition. I really wanted to love it, but I didn’t. We really needed more of the Michael Myers we’ve come to love and geek over (and waaayy less of Corey Cunningham).

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

Overall, an intriguing watch with amazing performances. Cooper Koch particularly delivers a standout performance in nearly every scene he’s in. If any episode deserves praise, it’s the Hurt Man episode - it was so heavy, intimate and raw.

I didn’t care for all the extra entertainment fluff and theoretical plot devices throughout the series. At times, the show feels unfocused in the sense that it tries to explore multiple plot points that contradict/undermine others. I’m also aware a noticeable amount…

    Halloween Kills

    ★★½

Quite the step down from its predecessor, but at the time of its release, I was still a satisfied consumer and optimistic that the third and final installment would succeed where this one didn’t.

The kills in this one are gnarlier than ever, which is a huge plus; however, it’s still not enough to warrant calling this a great, or even good, installment. It’s simply average - not terrible but not great either.

Having Laurie injured in the hospital the…

Andrew Garfield & Daisy Edgar Jones own the two halves of my heart. I was sad that they didn’t have any scenes together… for obvious reasons.

The show is a bit slow at times, but it still manages to keep you invested. Garfield & Jones both give exceptional performances as always.

I’m in in full blown Halloween mode, so, rightfully, I have to watch the #1 Halloween movie there is.

The score of this movie is flawless. It remains one of the all-time best scores, regardless of genre. It amplifies the tension and anticipation in nearly every scene. Love me some Michael Myers!

Erin is the ultimate final girl
(ok well, besides maybe Sidney Prescott)

The blender scene has to be one of the gnarliest horror kills. iykyk.

    Speak No Evil

    ★★★½

James McAvoy playing mentally-unhinged psychotic characters is my new favorite genre.

Overall, this movie is worth a watch, but it does struggle from some buildup and pacing issues. There are moments that seem to keep the plot exactly where it was rather than advance it. The last 25 minutes does have its brutal moments, but it seemed to unravel fairly fast. Nonetheless, James’ performance compensates for the minor issues of the movie.

Jill is the best Ghostface. Enough said.

My friends? What world are you living in? I don't need friends. I need fans.

The opening sequence is quite the experience, like always. This installment doesn’t really bring any new ideas to the table but it’s still such a fun time. Videotaping the kills was very in tune with the decade. Very self-aware and good mix of horror and comedic relief.

    Halloween

    ★★★½

This movie made me naively optimistic for the future of Halloween. It felt refreshing, albeit an interesting choice in direction. It was honestly just a good time to return to the Halloween franchise after so long away.

The kills we’re given lean more into the gore aspect but nothing too excessive. The psychological distress and familial tension we see Laurie experience gives her a more personable, human quality. She’s also quite the badass in this movie. I really like the whole duality between Laurie and Michael.

    The Descent

    ★★★★

Compelling lead characters, amazing tension buildup, great conflict development, and some of the most wild action scenes for a horror movie.

This movie really starts off with a bang in the beginning and then another bang once they’re in the caves. Such an adrenaline rush. All the scenes in the cave passageways are crafted to induce the upmost claustrophobia. If the natural element of claustrophobia isn’t scary enough for you, then you have the physical threat that are the monsters. …
