i am never looking up at the sky ever again
This was an absolute fkin banger. Amazing casting overall, and the siblings perfectly complement eachother; OJ was quiet, serious and introverted, whereas Emerald was charismatic, loud and extroverted. I particularly loved OJ's sense of responsibility and his connection with the horses, as well as how sensible his reactions were (eg. when the alien/creature that kills people if they look at it hovered over his car, he was like "nope", shut the door & waited till it left). Emerald was amazing in the final sequences, but honestly Kiki Palmer delivered a consistently incredible performance. Steven Yeun's character was also great and I loved the complexity of his personality and how he was shaped by the trauma he experienced back as a child on the sitcom.
The fast, sudden cuts took a bit to get used to, but in the end I really enjoyed the style and I feel like it fit the movie well. We didn't see everything that happened, either through cuts or the scene playing out but obscured from the view of the camera.
The alien's design was cool, especially how it changed in the final sequences, and I appreciated the ranch setting. It was definitely a great location choice because of how remote and yet imbued with small pockets of life it was, allowing for not only a sense of isolation in the face of the alien's attacks, but also connection with family and those at the nearby amusement park.
TLDR: a must watch!
