Megalopolis 2024
I don't mind the lightning, but thunder scares the shit out of me.
To me, "Megalopolis" is the movie of the artist trying to understand a major shift in culture and how they can fit back in to it.
The "culture" is more clearly the greater world, but in my own way I also saw it as the creative arts in this age of content; Fishburne a screenwriter, Driver the editor, LaBeouf the director...the talent, marketing, producers, executives. It's a…

Small Things Like These 2024
Beautifully quite with a tender performance from Cillian Murphy at the center as a man weighed down by all the injustice around him.

Paths of Glory 1957
How can you understand that and allow these men to be shot tomorrow?
François Truffau once said “ There is no such thing as an anti-war film.” The idea that no matter how violence is portrayed, a movie will eventually glorify the thrill of adventure and conflict. While this statement isn’t true for every movie, it can still be greatly applicable to countless war movies. Paths of Glory is undoubtedly a massive achievement for then 28 year old director Stanley…

A Sacrifice 2024
🇮

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in Italy to have seen this… -
Brightburn 2019
Interesting concept! A superhero horror origin story which apparently flips the origin of Superman on its head (it's absolutely nuts that I've seen this movie before any Superman movie in full). The execution is passable. It could've definitely been better if the script was written to allow for more of a character arc for Brandon who falls a bit flat as the main character which is obviously not a good sign. Elizabeth Banks' performance is great but something seems uncanny…

Chopping Mall 1986
"It's not you, Freddy. I guess I'm just not used to being chased around a mall by killer robots."
Aren't we all? Killer robots of course being an allegory for exploding capitalism and the insatiable American diet for material consumerism.
Or not.

Police Story 2 1988
Let's see Tom Cruise do these stunts himself.
So as a kid Blockbuster advertised the shit out of Super Cop, which I rented without realizing it was the third instalment of the franchise. For about a year it was the only Police Story available at my local Blockbuster. Eventually they got Police Story one, so I watched the first and third film in this series repeatedly, but never saw the second one until tonight.
Anyway it's my least favorite of the three, but still fun as hell. -
The Big Heat 1953
An exceptionally well-crafted Noir that delivers everything you want from the genre. Glenn Ford is immediately iconic as Detective Dave Bannion - this is the last guy you want on your case if you're dabbling in some corruption. At a minimum, you're getting a helluva punch for your trouble.
I appreciated how easy the story was to follow, sometimes these hard-boiled stories are so dense that it's hard to keep up with the pieces as they shift and rearrange. The Big Heat gives you most of the pieces early on, the plot is driven by the danger of putting all the answers together.

Graveyard Shift 1990
The creature feature is about as old as cinema itself. These unique and bizarre creations don't fall into an established lore like other horror entities. It should come as no surprise that the modern master of horror, Mr. King has created his fair share of these dastardly beasts.
The Graveyard shift is based upon a short story of the same name. It was eventually part of a collection of his short stories called The Night Shift. This collection featured 20…

Dinner in America 2020
There should be a word for this type of script, the type that has a genuinely smart narrative but the tone they’re going for calls for constant slurs and maximum edginess. The type that will turn off anyone who just sees it as a lazy shock-comedy, or even people who just can’t handle how intense it is. But even beyond that you have to assess whether 10 slurs a minute is actually an effective way to convey its modern American…
