Baking Buddies (Japanese: セレナとヒカリの贈り物 Serena and Hikari's Gifts) was a story event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pairs Serena (Palentine's 2021) & Whimsicott and Dawn (Palentine's 2021) & Alcremie.
During this event, players could earn Melty Chocolate, Fluffy Frosting, Fresh Berries, and Chocoberry Cakes from battles that could be redeemed in the shop. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Ultimate Ingredient Collection, which could only be challenged once per day. Extra ingredients were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.
This event featured the Full-Force Battle, where players were challenged to defeat a large group of strong opponents. Similar to the Legendary Arena, players could use multiple teams with a limited number of total sync pairs, with the opponents' health carrying over between rounds and with previously used pairs unable to be used again until the challenge is reset. medals could be earned by completing specific missions.
In addition, players could earn a medal for completing the first four-story areas in the event.
The story areas Serena's Gift and Dawn's Gift could be unlocked by purchasing Serena's Letter and Dawn's Letter, respectively, from the shop. Completing these areas rewarded the player with Serena's Mocha Poké Puff and Dawn's Sweet Poké Puff, respectively. These four items are not automatically exchanged for coins.
First run
The event first ran from January 29 to February 19, 2021. The "Serena Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Serena (Palentine's 2021) & Whimsicott for the duration of the event, and the "Dawn Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Dawn (Palentine's 2021) & Alcremie starting on February 1, 2021, and lasting until the end of the event.
Players had a chance to obtain access to the special area Whirling, Twirling, Tasty Battles when completing one of the Challenge Pasio's Trainers, Ingredient Gathering, Ingredient Hunting, or Ultimate Ingredient Collection areas; this area could only be played once before it had to be unlocked again.
The player could battle using Serena (Palentine's 2021) & Whimsicott or Dawn (Palentine's 2021) & Alcremie to obtain +0.6× bonus ingredients; Lillie & Clefairy to obtain +0.4× bonus ingredients; and any unlisted Fairy-type sync pairs to obtain +0.2× bonus ingredients.
Second run
The event reran from February 5 to 19, 2022. The "Serena and Dawn Seasonal Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Serena (Palentine's 2021) & Whimsicott and Dawn (Palentine's 2021) & Alcremie for the duration of the event. In addition, the "5★-Guaranteed Seasonal Scout" ran during the same time period. This scout could only be used once, guaranteed that the player would receive a 5★ pair, and had a chance of recruiting Serena (Palentine's 2021) & Whimsicott and Dawn (Palentine's 2021) & Alcremie. However, they did not have higher odds of appearing than any other sync pairs available in the scout.
The player could battle using Serena (Palentine's 2021) & Whimsicott or Dawn (Palentine's 2021) & Alcremie to obtain +0.6× bonus ingredients; Lillie & Clefairy to obtain +0.4× bonus ingredients; and Scottie/Bettie & Pikachu, Scottie/Bettie & Torchic, or any unlisted Fairy-type sync pairs to obtain +0.2× bonus ingredients.
If the player had obtained Serena's Letter or Dawn's Letter in the previous run, the area Serena's Gift or Dawn's Gift would be unlocked immediately. If the player exchanged ingredients for these letters in the shop, the duplicate letter would be converted into a 3★ Power-Up. However, playing through Serena's Gift or Dawn's Gift again would not give the player a duplicate of Serena's Mocha Poké Puff or Dawn's Sweet Poké Puff.
Plot
Serena and Dawn invite the player to go into town, in their new Palentine's Day-themed outfits. After meeting up, Dawn and Serena tell the player that they need to start collecting ingredients to make some Palentine's Day sweets through winning Pokémon battles. While heading to a shop to check out some ingredients, they run into an Ace Trainer and Cheryl. Cheryl tells the group that the Ace Trainer wants to make some sweets for someone close to her, but is not very good at it. Dawn invites Cheryl and the Ace Trainer to make sweets with her, Serena, and the player, and they accept.
After collecting all the ingredients they need, Dawn, Serena, the player, Cheryl, and the Ace Trainer start looking for a place to start making the sweets. They run into Lillie, who asks the player if they are getting ready for Palentine's Day too. The player says yes, and Lillie tells them that she is making sweets with Professor Bellis and Mina. The player's group asks Lillie if they can all tag along with her, and she agrees. Everything is going well with the cooking, until something explodes because of the Ace Trainer. Everyone in the group offers to help out, until something explodes again and the Ace Trainer runs away. Professor Bellis tells the group, along with another Ace Trainer, to look for the first Ace Trainer while she cleans up the results of the two explosions.
Dawn, Serena, Lillie, Mina, Cheryl, and the player find the Ace Trainer, who is very upset over her skills as a cook. After brainstorming a bit, the group comes up with an idea that could help the Ace Trainer make sweets without something bad happening. The Ace Trainer is unsure at first, until the second Ace Trainer from before tells her that she can do it. Along with the encouragement of the group's Pokémon and the second Ace Trainer, she decides to give cooking another try and succeeds, making some delicious sweets she shares with her new friends, the other Ace Trainer and her partner Pokémon.
