Described in source - is it necessary?
edit@Esquilo: Hi! I have removed the constraint related to described by source (P1343)Dictionary of Swedish National Biography (Q379406) because it seems redundant to me: in general external identifiers don't require described by source (P1343), since it's evident that, if the ID is present in the item, the item is described in the source which constitutes the ID. described by source (P1343) is obviously useful when there isn't an external ID related to the source. For this reason I would be inclined to remove both the constraint and the existing claims. What's your opinion? --Epìdosis 14:39, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- I see it the other way around; If someone use the property described by source (P1343) one does not expect sources to be missing just because they happen to have an external identifier. /ℇsquilo 16:49, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- Now ongoing general discussion here. --Epìdosis 10:44, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- I don't see the need either. P1343 should be used if there is no dedicated property (such as P3217). --- Jura 07:21, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- described by source (P1343) is always good as that give a good overview what sources are used
- for Dictionary of Swedish National Biography ID (P3217) we have
- articles about a person --> The person in Wikidata is exact match (Q39893449)
- articles about a family --> The person in Wikidata is narrow match (Q39893967) i.e. Dictionary of Swedish National Biography ID (P3217) should just be set in described by source (P1343)
- for Dictionary of Swedish National Biography ID (P3217) we have

- @Salgo60: I agree that in case of narrow match (Q39893967) having described by source (P1343) is surely pertinent; but in case of exact match (Q39893449) with Dictionary of Swedish National Biography ID (P3217) the use of P1343 seems superfluous, isn't it? --Epìdosis 17:09, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Epìdosis: I see it as a good pattern --> We currently have a "dataset" containing over 3,500 Swedish PM people since 1867, which streamlines the process of identifying sources associated with these individuals. However, it appears that library references like VIAF and ISNI are not added to the "described by source" described by source (P1343). I feel this highlights a shortcoming of open platforms like Wikidata, where each user has unique needs and use-cases. In our specific instance, concerning Swedish PM members, Wikidata is used in a research project that extensively employs this data for machine learning activities and TEI, as can be seen in the GitHub repository "Riksdagens Corpus."
-
- another argument why care about Dictionary of Swedish National Biography ID (P3217) is that it is very high quality and the best historical data for Swedish history bios and has a been created during more than 100 years BUT they dont understand linked data so we have to make it valuable for people doing research by using Wikidata
