History

Harran was the son of Kamuu, the Homo mermani leader who founded the undersea kingdom of Atlantis and ruled as its first king.[1] After Kamuu's death, his son succeeded him as king.[2]

Circa 5800 BC,[3] in the third decade after the death of Kamuu, the mid-Atlantic city of Atlantis was besieged by the Faceless Ones. Suma-Ket and his tribe came from the north and, in exchange for being allowed to settle in Atlantis, Suma-Ket magically banished the murderous creatures from the city.[2]

The people of Atlantis saw Suma-Ket as the savior who had delivered them and, amazed by his wonderous acts of sorcery, began to follow Ket, even slaying King Harran in order to please Ket.[2] The Atlanteans then proclaimed Suma-Ket king of the realm.[4]

Notes

  • Namor, the Sub-Mariner #38 is the first and only story in which this character was mentioned and he was only referenced as the "king of Atlantis" and "the son of Kamuu." He was given the name "Harran" in a profile on Kalen for the Unofficial Handbook of the Marvel Universe and that name became canon in the entry for Atlantis that was published in All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #1.
  • According to that Namor issue, Suma-Ket and his Dark Court had been trapped in the mystical prison known as the Grey Waters for five thousand years and that would have placed Hassan's death at c. 3000 BC. However, since that would have meant that Atlantis was founded by Kamuu only a few centuries earlier, later stories and various Official Handbook entries have moved the date further into the past.
  • The Mariana Trench is known to the Atlanteans as "Harran's Rift".
