New York-born actor and television director Alan Bergmann (17 October 1927 – 31 August 2017; age 89) played Lal in the Star Trek: The Original Series third season episode "The Empath".
Prior to this, Bergmann appeared on the television series The Nurses, starring fellow Original Series guest actor Stephen Brooks. Bergmann also guest-starred in an episode of The Wild Wild West and an episode of The Big Valley, both of which also guest-starred Paul Comi. In 1967, Bergmann appeared with Paul Fix in an episode of The High Chaparral, a Western series which starred Henry Darrow. Later television appearances include guest spots on Bracken's World (co-starring with Booker Bradshaw and Madlyn Rhue), Mission: Impossible (with Leonard Nimoy, Sid Haig, Susan Howard, James B. Sikking, and Paul Sorensen), Search (with Malachi Throne), Mannix (with Leslie Parrish, Celeste Yarnall, and a two-parter with John Colicos), and Wonder Woman (with Harris Yulin).
Bergmann also had a few films to his credit, including Black Like Me (1964, with David Huddleston), Welcome Home, Johnny Bristol (1972, with Brock Peters and John Hoyt), and Turbulence (1997, with Catherine Hicks).
