Anomaly consolidation duty

Scientific materials being packed up as part of anomaly consolidation duty

"It's trash day. It's our bosses who have accumulated all sorts of stuff saying, "Hey, peons, come pick up our trash.""
– Beckett Mariner, 2381 ("The Spy Humongous")

Anomaly consolidation duty (also known as anomaly duty or ACD) was an annual work assignment aboard Federation starships, in which hazardous scientific research materials that could not be recycled in a matter recombinator, accumulated by the senior staff from their missions, were packed up and sent to a facility for proper disposal. Some junior officers regarded ACD as a degrading day where they had to pick up their superiors' "trash". In addition, many of the materials were improperly stored, often outside a sample container or, at best, inside one with a loose lid, making the duty dangerous.

In 2381, Ensigns Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, Sam Rutherford, and D'Vana Tendi were assigned to anomaly consolidation duty on the USS Cerritos, though Boimler got out of it from associating with the Redshirts. After a series of dangerous encounters with various unsecured samples, Tendi admitted that she had requested ACD for them because the others had complained about not being assigned to exciting missions.
