Data began visiting a holographic version of Freud in the holodeck for a psychoanalysis in 2370, after having nightmares about workmen ripping up the USS Enterprise-D and attacking him. After a session with Freud, Data did not feel he had been helped and sought counseling from Troi. She gave him a different analysis and said, "next time see me before you see Sigmund." Troi also told Data that even Freud did not interpret everything, as "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Later, Freud was seen in Data's dream as symbolic representation of his unconscious mind. Freud used a antique telephone to speak with Data and later Captain Picard in order to warn them of the dangers surrounding him. Freud was then "murdered" by one of the workmen. (TNG: "Phantasms")
In 2374, Captain Janeway told Tuvok that Freud had considered Leonardo da Vinci to have had a problem with his mother. (VOY: "Concerning Flight")
One of Freud's contributions to the field of psychology was the concept of projection. Sylvia Tilly referred to this concept in discussions with Osyraa, attributing it to Freud and suggesting that Osyraa's attempts to undermine Tilly's self-esteem were merely projection. (DIS: "Su'Kal")
The hologram of Freud in "Phantasms" was played by actor Bernard Kates.
