The USS Oberth (NCC-602) was a 23rd century Federation Oberth-class starship operated by Starfleet. It was the prototype of the class.
In 2278, the Oberth appeared on a Starship Mission Assignments chart on the bridge of the USS Bozeman after exiting a temporal causality loop 2368. (TNG: "Cause And Effect")
In 2293, the Oberth was assigned a deep space exploration mission in Sector 22958. The ship was named on a Starship Mission Assignments chart on the USS Enterprise-A bridge. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
Named after Hermann Oberth, an Austrian with German ancestors, who was a physicist and space travel enthusiast and author of the book Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen (By Rocket into Planetary Space). (Star Trek Encyclopedia, 3rd ed., p. 332)
According to a ship list included in the plans, and not seen in the extended cut of the movie, the ship was commanded by R. Morey, and the ship was located in Sector 22956.
The ship's captain may have been named after the sixth movie's first assistant camera operator Rob Morey. [1]
