Basketball is a human competitive team sport. In basketball, the object of the game is to move the ball down a court and throwing it through a 10-foot high hoop, while preventing the opposing team from doing the same. The game was played at a number of levels, including amateur, high school, college, and professionally. The game was one of the most popular spectator sports in the United States of America.

While baseball had mostly died out on Earth by the 2040s, basketball remained popular well into the 22nd century. One of the shuttlebays of the Earth Starfleet vessel Enterprise (NX-01) was designed so that it could be converted into a basketball court.
