Battlecruiser is a starship classification that is applied to a starship that is more heavily armed than a cruiser or light cruiser, but not as heavily armed as a battleship or dreadnought.

History and specifications[]

In the 23rd century, this classification was used to describe starships of both the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire. While Starfleet preferred the term heavy cruiser to be applied, other races continued to use the battlecruiser designation, however the distinction was made in that the battlecruisers of those powers had little of the scientific outfitting of the Federation's heavy cruisers. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Search for Spock)
