In July 2267, Hikaru Sulu discussed with Pavel Chekov that chess was invented in India and adapted in southern Europe. Chekov claimed chess was perfected in Russia. Sulu dismissed the claim but conceded that there was a long tradition of excellence in chess in Russian culture. (TOS novel: Harm's Way)
The traditional two-dimensional variation later gave rise to more complicated successors such as three-dimensional chess. (TOS episode: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")
Eventually, a game called four-dimensional chess was formulated. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally)
Both Hikaru Sulu and James T. Kirk compared the robot knights they encountered on Argylus to chessmen. (TOS comic: "Child's Play")
Jeremy Grayson, a Human ancestor of Spock, was a grand master level chess player. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)
