Gold (symbol Au) is a chemical element, a transition metal with atomic number 79 on the periodic table.
Characteristics and history[]
Gold has an atomic mass of 196.967. Gold was discovered by Humans in Earth's ancient history. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)
Gold was a somewhat rare mineral on Earth. Most Human economies were based on this metal until the 20th century. The gold rush of 1848 caused a massive influx of people to San Francisco and northern California. (ST - New Worlds, New Civilizations short story: "At Times of Peril")
In the year 1855, outlaw Billy Clancey offered a time traveling Montgomery Scott $300 in gold for his "trick gun" after witnessing Scott use his phaser. (TOS comic: "A Bomb in Time")
Prior to United Federation of Planets contact, gold and silver had no meaning on Capella IV. Starfleet trade ships introduced these materials as currency prior to 2267. (TOS - Star Trek 3 novelization: Friday's Child)
Gold interfered with the respiration of 23rd century Cybermen. In 2268, The Doctor converted the gold from a Starfleet communicator antennae into flakes, then tossed it into the face of a Cyberman. (TNG - Assimilation² comic: "Issue 3")
