Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! At present the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Discovery and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG, Star Trek: Infinite and Star Trek Online, as well as other post-57th Anniversary publications such as the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the {{spoiler}}, {{spoilers}} OR {{majorspoiler}} tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). Star Trek: The Animated Series (or TAS) was the second, and only non-canon Star Trek TV series produced. As with Star Trek: The Original Series, TAS is formally titled as just Star Trek, with the subtitle The Animated Series being used to differentiate it both from the original live-action series and its other spin-offs (some sources listing the title as Star Trek (The Animated Adventures).

Twenty-two episodes were produced, and like TOS, chronicled the voyages of the starship Enterprise, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk on its first five-year mission of exploration. It is generally recognized as taking place during the last two years of the Enterprise's five-year mission, following the three years chronicled in the original series. All of the original crew returned, with the exception of Chekov, while two new regulars -- M'Ress and Arex -- were added. The series' animated format allowed for more alien and complex designs the live-action series budget could allow, but the quality of the animation is often criticized. Several original series writers also worked on the animated series, including D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold.

Until recent years, the inclusion of "non-canon" TAS elements was either discouraged or outright forbidden in licensed materials. Following the death of Gene Roddenberry, these restrictions were relaxed, allowing for such references as the addition of Arex and M'Ress as regulars in the Star Trek: New Frontier series, and the Nasat race in the Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers series.

In November 2006, TAS became the final Star Trek series to be released on DVD.

As TAS is a direct continuation of TOS, using most of the live show's elements, most media related to it can be found under the TOS banner.
