The USS Buran (initially NX-96400^[2], later NCC-96400^[1]) was a 25th century Federation starship, the Buran-class command dreadnought cruiser^[3] prototype in Starfleet service from the 2410s decade. Service history and disposition[]

During the recovery of Federation shipyard Yard 39 after the Iconian War in the year 2410, the Cardenas-class cruiser was among the hulks Starfleet found. (STO Issue 05: "U.S.S. Buran NCC-96400")

Starfleet refitted the Cardenas class, and returned it to service as a command dreadnought cruiser, a combination of command starship and dreadnought cruiser. Alongside, the Buran was developed as a 25th century counterpart of the veritable Cardenas class. (STO website: Mirror of Discovery: The Command Dreadnought Cruiser Bundle!)

The ship was designated NX-96400 when Captain Th'Pev was assigned its commanding officer. At the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, ship designer Lieutenant Whetu toured the vessel with Captain Th'Pev. They discussed it being named Buran. All previous Starfleet vessels named Buran had been destroyed in the line of duty. (STO website: Mirror of Discovery: First Impressions)

The new Buran was specifically named after the Cardenas-class USS Buran (NCC-1422) lost in battle with the Klingon Empire over Priors 5d^[4] in 2256. (STO Issue 05: "U.S.S. Buran NCC-96400")

The spinal focusing array aft of the Cardenas main deflector was a previously abandoned design feature reintegrated into the Buran. Using onboard systems, the Buran was the first Starfleet ship capable of generating and weaponizing an ion storm. (STO Issue 05: "U.S.S. Buran NCC-96400")

The idea for that was conceived by Captain Th'Pev and Lieutenant Whetu during their tour of the prototype ship. (STO website: Mirror of Discovery: First Impressions)

The ship was officially commissioned in 2410. On active duty, it had the registry number NCC-96400 and was classified as a Starfleet dreadnought cruiser. Its standard crew included 755 personnel.

The Buran also incorporated two features from preceding command battlecruisers - a combat information center (CIC) and a dedicated flag bridge. The ship's complement of auxiliary combat craft was commanded by the squadron CO from the flag bridge. Both facilities were used in and out of combat.

After entering service, the new Buran visited several planets across the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO Issue 05: "U.S.S. Buran NCC-96400")
