Ao no Exorcist: Kyoto Fujouou-hen

The ExWire of True Cross Academy are beset with shock and fear in the aftermath of discovering that one of their own classmates, Rin Okumura, is the son of Satan. But for the moment, they have more pressing concerns than that of Rin's parentage: the left eye of the Impure King, a powerful demon, has been stolen from the academy's Deep Keep. After an attempt is made to steal the right eye in Kyoto as well, Rin and the other ExWires are sent to investigate the mystery behind the Impure King and the ultimate goal of the thief.

While this mission has them cooperating for the time being, Rin has never felt more distant from his fellow exorcists. In his attempt to reconcile with them, he undergoes specialized training to control his dark power. However, when the right eye is stolen not long after their arrival, the unthinkable threat of a traitor amongst them leaves them in need of all the power they can get.

OKAY, FIRST AND FOREMOST, YOU'VE GOTTA FORGET EP 16 AND ONWARDS OF SEASON 1 TO GET THIS...

...and if we're clear on this, then you get here: the kyoto-hen arc.

To start off, I would first like to tell you that this has spoilers, probably from the anime, and the manga.

Now that's settled, let's start.

First, I get why people hate this anime so much: the characters. And I swear, half the cast did get on my nerves. Probably thought that they weren't even vital to the story. So what changed my mind?

If you don't have enough patience, and if you don't read or aren't planning to ... read the source material for Ao No Exorcist, then, I pity you. You're missing a lot, no kidding.

Characters: 9/10

Let's start off with Shura. Okay, I've seen comments about her being a drunkard, better yet, about her being useless. But if you've at least tried to read the manga, you'll manage to see her backstory. You'll understand her better as to why she acts the way she acts.

But it doesn't end there.

In that same arc, you'll see Shima (yes, the pink-head everyone keeps telling that's useless??). And as a matter of fact, he actually plays a big role this whole time. Well, maybe not for the whole time, but at least in the following arcs after Shura's.

Next up, Shiemi. It's an understatement to say that I've encountered people that dislike her. They call her useless, annoying, etc. I won't deny the annoying part, since sometimes, she is (but tbh I understand her hard-headed personality since I'm kinda like her too), but I tell you, she's not useless. No, not in the very least, especially in the recent chapters whereas she's actually from an old lineage of (actually idk I forgot), but they are vital to the story. I can't say she's less annoying, but at least, she grew up, even a little bit.

I can't really say anything much for Konekomaru, since he's annoying, and yeah, he's still the same in the manga, which is the total opposite of Bon.

Bon in the later part of the manga gets to be an apprentice of Light, a high-level exorcist. I kinda liked the growth this gives him, working under someone kinda stubborn and messy. He also becomes a better friend to the twins, so yeah, character improvement.

For Izumi (did I remember her name right?), she gets a bit of a character background check, which kinda explains why she acts the way she acts (which is also justifiable given that her sister was taken away from her if I remember that correctly). Anyways, she and Bon helps Rin in the recent arc, and even becomes a better friend too! Okay, character development too.

Rin and Yukio kinda became better brothers, especially Rin. Well, at least, in the recent chapters.

Also, may I add that in the recent chapters, we get Shirou's origin story, which features Rin and Yukio's mom, Yuri! From this backstory, we also get to see how Rin matures more, or at least, grows up a little.

Plot: 7/10

Now, I haven't got much say in the Kyoto-hen plot, since half of it was predictable. To say the least, it was entertaining to watch. Nothing out of extraordinary that can make you gasp or shout or jump, but it's not bland either. The pacing was kinda rushed towards the end, or maybe that's just me.

To the people that say that this wasted the potential that it had, especially for having a good cast but never doing them justice, I hope you read the manga. Kyoto-hen is the starting point to where the plot expands even more as the characters grow.

Art: 7/10

Beautiful backgrounds. The CGI was kinda weird on some episodes. Other than that, the animation is solid. Nothing too weird or too bad.

Music/Sound: 7/10

Okay, season one's op beats this, but nonetheless, beautiful opening by the same band. Besides that, nothing stands much for me.

Enjoyment: 8/10

Did I waste a day watching Ao No Exorcist? Yes.

Do I regret it? No. In the least, it's a pretty good decision.

I pretty much enjoyed this sequel more than the first one since this stuck on to the manga better, and the pacing is so much better compared to the first season. Even better, you can at least see some character improvement here, which definitely was the missing factor in season 1.

At the very least, what I can say about this anime is: this isn't for viewers who are quick to judge and are impatient since kyoto-hen is just the tip of the iceberg. So unless you have the patience, then go for this anime! Would definitely recommend!

Mixed Feelings

This season, I believe, is for people who prefer things to be straightforward.

Story - 7/10
Some parts of the story were continued from Season 1. The first few episodes basically summarize what happened in Season 1. The plot was coherent throughout. The story was pretty simple and it didn't really please me. It was a little tedious. Many things were predictable. I do feel like it could've been done better. The good thing about this season is that they get right to the point without dragging it out. There was some lightheartedness sprinkled throughout. The mystery surrounding the demon didn't really hold my interest. I didn't ... find it particularly interesting. They certainly enjoy displaying Shura's body. I wasn't paying attention.

Art - 9/10
The art style was quite fitting for the story. I just wish it wasn't so flat, but it's fine. The animation flowed quite well. The background drawings were excellent. Very attractive. Particularly the tourist attractions in Kyoto. The color scheme complements each other well. The colors were more on the cool side, with a few complementary pops here and there. The colors were able to give the story a dark but also happy feel.

Sound - 7/10
I skipped the OP and ED. I always do that unless it's too good to skip. The voice actor was able to adapt their voice to the character's personality.

Character - 8/10
So I'm going to talk about the main character, Rin and Yukio. They are brothers. First, let me discuss Rin. Rin is Satan's child. He struggles to keep his blue flames under control. It spirals out of control. Especially when he is emotional. He went insane there. But, by the end, he had gained control. Characters like Shura and Shiemi helped him gain the confidence he needed to open a sword called Kurikara.

Now, Yukio. Rin's younger brother is Yukio. He is more reserved and introverted. I'd say he lacks self-assurance. He doesn't completely trust his brother after seeing his flames. He thinks he might go out of control again. His brother and he have a love-hate relationship. This is perfectly normal.

Enjoyment
In my opinion, I feel like people will like this because it’s straight to the point and it doesn’t drag on. For those who like a mystery where you don’t have to think so much about it. Also for those who like some ecchi service.

I give this show a 7 out of 10 because the story was straight to the point. A good amount for 12 episodes. Before I watch shows where the story is just starting in the middle. Would I rewatch this? No.

Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga



In advance, I have to note that the season does not follow the end of season 1. Episodes 18-25 were not canon and accordingly, they do not exist in season 2.
Don't get confused by this.


... Ao No Exorcist only follows the manga in the second season. However, almost nothing changed. This season had exactly the same problems in terms of characters, story and tension.

The plot was far from creative and nothing developed. In the end there was a final battle against a demon and that was it.

The characters and their relationships were at least somewhat in the foreground, but they all felt quite weak.

Compared to the previous season, this one has almost no qualities. Sympathy was maintained, but nothing could match the average.


Story

You can see the whole plot from beginning to end in the description. The protagonist is suspected because of his origin. Someone tries to animate a monster and at the end there is a final battle. The whole thing was felt with a lot of average conversations.

Animation / pictures

The animations are a bit duller than their predecessor, but they are still satisfactory and the individual scenes worked well with the musical support.

Characters

So far it hasn't happened that the characters have developed great. Hardly any change on the part of this season, except that the relationships had to be maintained again.

Music

The intro was pretty weak this time, both in terms of performance and music. The Osts are still very noteworthy.

Conclusion

I expected more from this season, given that it finally followed the manga. Unfortunately, this arc lacked not only excitement, but actual content. This course of action was very uncreative and transparent from the start.
