Pete's cousin Albert from a neighboring town visits him and falls in love with Jennie. Such is her infatuation for him that he persuades her to elope, giving as an excuse that she has received an invitation from an aunt. A neighbor fisherman sees Jennie with a stranger and on his return to the fishing village spreads the gossip that she is in town with a man and not, as is generally supposed, with her aunt. Pete overhears this fisherman's gossip and knocks him down. The man naturally harbors resentment for this treatment and cherishes a plan for revenge. Pete goes to the city to ask the assistance of his cousin, Albert, in finding Jennie. He finds to his great sorrow that Jennie is living with Albert, but on being shown the wedding ring, forgives her. A year passes and Albert turns out to be a useless drunkard and deserts his wife and baby. She in her poverty returns to her father's home where she is received with open arms. In the meantime, Albert meets in a low saloon the man Pete knocked down for traducing Jennie's name. This rascal persuades Albert to join him in robbing Pete's nets at night. Albert, who has changed much from the dapper young person he was when he first won Jennie's heart, that he has not much fear of detection. He joins them and they are seen by Pete and his companions in the act of stealing the fish. They are pursued in a boat. Jennie watches their progress from the land through a marine glass. When she sees in the distance the thief knock Pete over into the water, she raises a rifle and shoots him. When brought ashore the dead robber turns out to be her own husband.
