One morning he goes to the regional center to do some shopping. There Aleksey meets an old acquaintance Oleg Tikhomirov, who offers him a job as a caretaker of a base in a neighboring village for high-ranking people. His responsibilities will include cleaning the area, and most importantly, providing visitors with everything they need. Aleksey meets the owner of the base, Konstantin Dobrynin, a famous journalist who is now involved in publishing and media business. Nikolaev accepts the offer, and on the very first evening guests arrive at the base. Among them is a tipsy Denis Turanov, director of the customs service. He begins to show the other guests an antique sword from the time of Aleksandr Nevsky worth half a million dollars. Against the background of a divergence of interests, a conflict arises between one of those present and Turanov. Nikolaev helps him get to the bedroom. There, Turanov mentions the murder of Aleksey's former partner, Andrey Krasnov. The next morning, Turanov's assistant finds his boss's body, and the antique weapon mysteriously disappears.
