What he dreams of is being a fisherman but his family (his mother, his sister, his brother in law) do not approve. They want him to be like everybody else, in other words to have a "real" job and to get married. At long last, Célestin yields to the pressure: he becomes a civil servant and marries Amelia, a young woman he feels nothing for. Naturally, happiness is not on the agenda...
