Welcome to Wikispecies!

Hello, and welcome to Wikispecies! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

If you have named a taxon, then it is likely that there is (or will be) a Wikispecies page about you, and other pages about your published papers. Please see our advice and guidance for taxon authors.

If you have useful images to contribute to Wikispecies, please upload them at Wikimedia Commons. This is also true for video or audio files containing bird songs, whale vocalization, etc.

Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your username (if you're logged in) and the date. Please also read the Wikispecies policy What Wikispecies is not. If you need help, ask me on my talk page, or in the Village Pump. Again, welcome!

Reginald Beavan

Regarding your recent edits to Reginald Beavan, changing our description from "ornithologist" to "ichthyologist": we list him as the author of the names of three species of bird. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:47, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Reginald Beavan is the younger brother of Robert Cecil Beavan (1841-1870). There is no C. In Reginald Beavans name. All birds are described by R.C. Beavan. Therefore his Obituary in The Ibis. Two publications here and here are from Reginald. All about fish and nothing about birds. It is true that he collected for his brother Robert Cecil Beavan. But he never described any bird. So he is in my opinion rather an ichthyologist than an ornithologist. In the German Wiki you can find all birds described by R.C. Beavan. Hope you can accept my explanation. See also my discussion here if you are still not convinced. I doubt even that he described a new fish.--Earwig (talk) 07:21, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
None of which I dispute, My point is: "we list him [Reginald] as the author of the names of three species of bird". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:21, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
And all three should be attributed to Robert Cecil Beavan instaed.--Earwig (talk) 12:00, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
If you have sources for that, please make the necessary adjustments. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:37, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I now see you have already done so; thank you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:42, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

John Wynantz Greene

Hi Earwig. I'm curious where you found the name Wynantz for John W. Greene. I refer you to page 14 of this 1999 issue of Lepidoptera News where he is said to be unknown. Quasi-grip (talk) 12:55, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Quasi-grip John Wynantz Greene was pysician and from NYC.--Earwig (talk) 13:39, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm not saying that it's not him, but I would claim that you need more than that. You're assuming too much. Quasi-grip (talk) 13:50, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Quasi-grip That in your reference is him here. But I doubt a member of Lyceum of Natural History here came from Ohio. There is a connection to NYC.--Earwig (talk) 08:29, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's all well and good, but I still feel that the basis for your choice is unsatisfactory. He is the only one with a matching life span, occupation and place of residence you could find on the internet. There can be others called John W. Greene. What you have so far is a *lead*, not proof. This is my opinion, others might disagree. I would welcome more viewpoints on the matter. Quasi-grip (talk) 09:10, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Must behim es well here here.--Earwig (talk) 09:48, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
He was even a curator at the Lyceum if I remember my searches correctly. If you can find a directory of staff members where his middle name is spelled out, then I'll be happy. Quasi-grip (talk) 10:13, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
