the members are Palestinian refugees who were born in Kuwait and had to flee to egypt after the Gulf War because of the PLO's support of Saddam Hussein.
Jaffa Phonix first emerged on the underground hip/hop scene in egypt and it recieved a noticable recognition from local and international media because of their lyrics in the first album (Resolution 194) concerning the palestinian refugees cause and the destruction of the palestinian society after the establishment of the state of Israel. after several live performances the band started to derive from hip hop bit by bit to a different ambiguous style that combines big beat and dance instrumentals with lyrical elements.
BBC World.com wrote about the band in the coverage of the sos music festival held in novemver 2006:
"This festival is awesome," said 19 year old Deena. "Jaffa Phonix are incredible, their lyrics are powerful and hip-hop is so cool. I'm so thankful that I am here to see them." Jaffa Phonix are brothers Faisal and Ali Abu Ghaban, Palestinian refugees who now live in Egypt. They spit angst-ridden political rhymes and spike the crowd's energy levels through the roof. ''They touch a chord with the euphoric audience and bound off the stage to rapturous applause'''
