Vitas Gerulaitis defeated John Lloyd in the final, 6–3, 7–6, 5–7, 3–6, 6–2 to win the December edition of the men's singles tennis tournament at the 1977 Australian Open.[1]

Roscoe Tanner was the defending champion, but lost in the first round to Chris Lewis.[1]
