Plot filled historical adventure!

Plot filled historical adventure!
Narrated by Kim StauntonGenre: historical romanceKansas, 1889Olivia Sterling, graduate of Oberlin, proud spinster and business owner, left the city for Kansas, to establish a new life away from the marriage her father wants to arrange to a man who wants to buy out her business. She's robbed at gunpoint on a train by infamous Outlaw Neil July. She then runs for mayor against another man trying to buy out her business, and wins! But she can't seem to stay away from July, who draws her in. The action packed story pits a brilliant and wonderful woman and her stalwart friends against the men who try to do her and her town harm. This is an exciting and plot filled book from Beverly Jenkins! When I pick up a book from her, I know generally now what to expect: brilliant characters, adventure, plot to the brim, and an excellent history lesson. I tend to find myself disconnected from the romance, based on her writing style (more tell than show), but again, knowing what to expect I enjoy that.Neil July is a Black Seminole, once decorated with a Congressional Medal, and now forced to live off of robbing trains in order to feed his family. What a perfect opposite to Olivia Sterling, intelligent upstanding Black churchgoing woman who accidentally wins her mayoral election. Their underlying character, of course, is the same: caretakers with big souls. This book does feel like it was written in 2005 - Olivia is a little too "not like other girls" and the reason July is attracted to her is her innocence, intelligence, but also upbringing as a proper lady. On the other hand, it features sexytimes in a tornado shelter, a gunslinging sister, and a cast of characters so totally Jenkins-like (including Preacher, the MMC in my favorite Jenkins book, Night Hawk).

Loved the historical aspects of this story! The characters were well developed. Themes of racism, inequality of women, discrimination of Black people and Native Americans among white people, disavowal of tribal culture through politics, and the mistreatment of Native Americans against Black people who had birth rights in the many tribes across the West made for interesting topics that this author provided information on worth researching. Thank you, Ms. Jenkins.

The book Something Like Love was chosen by the founder of the Supplanter Book Club because she absolutely loves Beverly Jenkins. Now, I do too. This book was a joy to read because it entertained and taught me some of my cultural history. I appreciate the research about the Black Seminoles and Nicodemus Kansas Beverly poured into the work and the pure gritty romance that was found on the pages. It was a fluid read, funny, sad, torrid, informative and down right good. I'll seek more of her books.

OH MY!!! And I thought "NIGHT SONG" was the ultimate! I have read them all and I often search for books that I've missed. YOU, MY SISTER HAVE WRITTEN BEYOND THE ULTIMATE!!!!! The story line as always, superb. The characters, wonderful. The book answered some of my very questions. Thank you for that! How delightfully cleaver how it all came about.

To all that have not read this book: If you love Ms. Jenkins' work (as I know you do) READ THIS BOOK! You will read the last page asking yourself, "Now how will she top this?" But we know she will. :-D Again, the page turning story line, the rich history, charming characters and of course, the hated characters: this book has all that and then some. Thank you Ms. Beverly Jenkins for once again writing such a wonderful story of love, history, heritage and most of all about OUR people. I shall await your next work, and until then, will certainly read this one again. Yes everyone, it is THAT good. Thank you my sister (and God bless you)

Okay, I have become obsessed with Beverly Jenkins and am on a quest to read all of her books, starting with the historical romances. I thought I had read all that are available on Kindle, but discovered this one the other night; of course, I bought it immediately. Just like all the other books, this one is good, y'all! I was curious to see how she would pull off the whole mayor and outlaw love story, but she did it, as only Ms. Bev can. I didn't read the reviews for the book beforehand, so imagine my surprise when Dix, Jackson AND Griffin showed up. I think I swooned! I loved that she brought them all together for the story. I already read Teresa's story, but it was nice to see her in her 'lady outlaw' days. It was also nice to see Chase and Cara Lee, especially since I just finished Night Song.

I would love for Two Shafts to have a story, and Preacher as well (nice twist for him in this story, by the way), but I guess Preacher is a little too righteous for that 'passion thing' - unless he marries the girl first. But not to worry, if a story is done for Preacher, Ms. Bev would definitely work it out.

Beverly Jenkins, you are the absolute best! Keep up the good work!

I loved this book…outlaw hero and a Mayor heroine! This is the perfect example of a slice-of-life story that Beverly Jenkins does so incredibly well. All of her stories really have those everyday moments, but this one was pretty much all the everyday moments and I enjoyed it so much. You really feel like you are part of this Kansas community and get to know the characters so well. I loved seeing familiar characters from her other books in this one too…Night Song, Always and Forever, and Wild Sweet Love.

In this book we have another amazing Beverly Jenkins heroine. Olivia is educated, she’s a successful business owner (a dressmaker/seamstress) and when her father arranges a marriage for her with a much older man that only is interested in her money when they marry, Olivia flees Chicago! She takes off to Kansas and along her journey there her train is robbed by infamous train robbers…one of the men she is really taken with and they have a little flirty moment. After the robbery, Olivia arrives to Kansas and really settles into the small black town and community. She opens her own shop and even becomes Mayor of the town! Neil, one of the train robbers, shows up in town and quickly connects again with Olivia. And I loved this outlaw hero romance!

I loved the history woven into the story, Jim Crow, the history of Black and Indigenous people during the times (the hero is Seminole), the discussions of Indigenous children’s schooling conditions, and women’s roles in their towns and politics at the time.

All I have to say is thank the good Lord Almighty for Ms. Jenkins she is a way of escape for me that can only be annointed by God!!! I have only to say this I loved this story I love the characters. I love most of Ms. Jenkins books a love story plus a history lesson. She is worth every cent I have paid I don't know how many books of Ms. Jenkins I have I must count them. Olivia Sterling and Neil July all I can say is don't you just love it when a known sinner turns his life around for the woman he loves? I know I am a sucker for those kinds of love stories. Just to know that people of color were successful in those days in spite of the troubled times is so wonderful and it lets you know that God has always been and still is on our side! I am grateful for Ms. Jenkins. However I am waiting for love story about Two Shafts I must have it Ms. Jenkins and if there is already one then I will apoligize. I am begging for a story on Two Shafts! That's all I have and please Ms. Jenkins keep writing! God Bless!!!
