The life of Marcela, an ordinary Czech woman, is explored throughout several decades of her life. The documentary observes several important societal issues. We are engaged to struggle and fight back with Marcela as her tragic life unfolds before our eyes, particularly as she deals with her daughter’s unexpected death, which almost drives her to suicide. However, the responsibility she feels toward her retarded son gives her the will to survive. Marcela’s story was initially part of a six-part series on Czech television about the fate of six married couples, however, the events that happened throughout Marcela’s life induced a wave of solidarity from the Czech public, which sent her money and personal support. This was the impetus behind Helena Třeštíková’s decision to focus solely on a documentary about Marcela. The distressing destiny of Marcela’s life and the act of support from the Czech public was therefore worthy of being expressed in this film. She is currently looking forward to a better future. If I believed in reincarnation and karma, I would certainly not want to meet Marcela’s previous incarnation. This way I can do nothing but sigh about her hard lot. Marcela (I mean the documentary) is better as a separate documentary than as part of Marriage Stories. It’s no better or worse than the other episodes, but over the years, also due to a change in approach by Třeštíková, this on-going documentary that is updated every six years takes us to different places than the other five episodes. But still, I think René or Ivana and Václav’s story worked better as the regular, six-year update documentary. If nothing else, I didn’t have the constant feeling that I would have much rather seen the situation from the point of view of other’s involved (the parents’, Jiří’s, Třeštíková’s, Ivana’s, Marcela’s sister, etc.).
