Mayor Nick Wasicsko took office in 1987 during Yonkers' worst crisis when federal courts ordered public housing built in the white, middle class side of town, dividing the city in a bitter battle fueled by fear, racism, murder and politics. In an America generations removed from the greatest civil rights struggles of the 1960s, the young mayor (Oscar Isaac) of a mid-sized American city is faced with a federal court order that says he must build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town. His attempt to do so tears the entire city apart, paralyzes the municipal government and, ultimately, destroys the mayor and his political future. From creator David Simon (HBO's "Treme" and "The Wire") and director Paul Haggis ("Crash"), and based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Lisa Belkin, the six-part miniseries SHOW ME A HERO explores notions of home, race and community through the lives of elected officials, bureaucrats, activists and ordinary citizens in Yonkers, NY. Eine einzige Sache hat mich hier gestört - all dieses Material sowie die Menge an Schicksalen, die auch für zehn Teile genug sein würden, das Tempo ist manchmal sehr "unausgeglichen". Jedoch die Entscheidung, daraus eine Miniserie zu machen, ist verständlich. Was anfangs als umfassende Sonde im Bereich Sozialpolitik der Stadt Yonkers erscheint, ist eigentlich in gleichem Maße eine Analyse der Psychologie eines Mannes. Und dank der fantastischen Leistung von Oscar Isaac merkt man das erst, wenn die erste Szene zum Schluss einen ziemlich bedrückenden und erdrückenden Sinn ergibt.

I hadn’t expected it, but this politician’s story shocked me. The name of the series suggests that the story of this politician won’t be ordinary. It’s also true that not all politicians are bastards, there are people among them who really want to do good for others. And Nick Wasicsko was something like that. Unfortunately, what happened was that politics knocked him down morally and psychologically, and it was incredibly depressing to watch this character portrayed by the excellent Oscar Isaac. So depressing that it all ended up the only way it could. HBO once again showed us what they can do. There were political bits that were a bit boring, but other than that, nothing worth criticizing.
