Plots(1)
The story concerns the cultural aftershocks which tear apart a small British Columbia town in the wake of a school-bus accident which leaves a number of local children dead. Ian Holm stars as Mitchell Stephens, a big-city lawyer who arrives in the interest of uniting the survivors to initiate a lawsuit; his maneuvering only drives the community further apart, reopening old wounds and jeopardizing any hopes of emotional recovery. In the ensuing atmosphere of suspicion and doubt, a teenage girl, left in a wheelchair after the accident, manages to regain her dignity and reunite the community. Through her courage, the townspeople are led to the "sweet hereafter," a realm reserved for those who are at peace with their fate. (official distributor synopsis)

The Sweet Hereafter tells a very powerful story, yet it manages to make it even more powerful by the way it is shot. Several human dimensions intertwine here, presented in absolutely perfect direction with great editing, where you have no problem understanding where you are and how the time jumps work. The film is very well shot. ()
Seen during the Challenge Tour 2015: 30 days with world cinema. Film number 22 - Canada. The most peculiar film I chose as part of the Tour. It is primarily a psychological drama unfolding at a very slow pace and gradually revealing the circumstances of the accident and the relationships between the individual characters. Well-acted, well-written, I give it a clean four stars. ()
