If…., directed by Lindsay Anderson, is a daringly chaotic vision of British society, set in a boarding school in late-sixties England. Before Kubrick made his mischief iconic in A Clockwork Orange, Malcolm McDowell made a hell of an impression as the insouciant Mick Travis, who, along with his school chums, trumps authority at every turn, finally emerging as a violent savior against the vicious games of one-upmanship played by both students and masters. Mixing color and black and white as audaciously as it mixes fantasy and reality, If…. remains one of cinema’s most unforgettable rebel yells. (official distributor synopsis)

Malcolm McDowell’s warmup for A Clockwork Orange smothers us for a hundred minutes with its aloofness, monotony and slow pace so that it can bring forth a real (and, thanks to the preceding events and their presentation, entirely understandable) revolt with all the more force at the end. A prophetic film. 85% ()
Malcolm McDowell was and is an incredible actor, who particularly dazzled at a young age. His characters are fascinating, frightening, and yet extremely interesting. It's not just Alex fromA Clockwork Orange, it's Mick from If.... This is an extremely absurd story, which, however, comes across as all too realistic. The final scene is good as hell. ()
