Based on a hit "romance novel" (long before that phrase was invented), KITTY is an opulent and very authentic look at 18th-century England, and Goddard is at the top of her beauty and form. Its yet another version of the "Pygmalion" story with Goddard as the poor Cockney girl who rises to become a duchess. She is first noticed by Kellaway, as the famous artist Constance Collier. They plan to use her beauty to their advantage and begin to educate her. A marriage is arranged between Goddard and elderly Dennis Hoey, who soon dies, and Goddard, expecting Hoeys child, then marries Owen, a duke. She convinces Owen that the child is his and when it arrives, Owen is so thrilled he dies from a heart attack. Goddard is now a duchess and can finally marry the man shes loved all along, the scheming Milland. The picture is a visual delight and Leisen, after attempting to borrow some of Gainsboroughs more famous works and being rebuffed, had some copies painted. The sets and costumes are lovely, the acting is more than competent and the film was a big winner for Paramount. (official distributor synopsis)
