Director Edgar G. Ulmer's little-seen film noir, RUTHLESS, is a CITIZEN KANE-like study of the emotionally debilitating effects of wealth and ambition. The film charts the rags-to-riches story of Horace Vendig (Zachary Scott), who was born into poverty but adopted by a rich family after he saved the life of their daughter. Over the years, Horace's newfound privilege transforms him into a callous gold-digger who views all relationships--especially those with women--as nothing more than opportunities for greater wealth. Scott turns in an absolutely chilling performance as the sociopathic protagonist, while Diana Lynn costars as the first love Vendig uses and discards to an ultimately tragic end.
