It is hard to describe something when others have already so eloquently written about it. However, I have to do this for myself and confirm this is a beautiful example of how you can turn average subject matter into something really original, interesting, slightly twisted, and complex. Melody of Oblivion is a really good show full of well-executed ideas, interesting symbolism, and well-developed characters. All of this comes wrapped up in a pretty good and sometimes profound narrative, which contains a good plot and is quite emotional. It is a mash-up of many things, although surprisingly, it holds together. Hopefully, everyone is going to find something they like, whether they are expecting a narrative that gives food for thought, likable characters, crazy action scenes, or perhaps (on a completely different note) erotic anime. So I really enjoyed it, and I would give some of the chapters, especially the one set in the labyrinth, five stars without a second thought, plus I am probably going to be thinking about this anime series and all the things it wanted to express and tell us (I think) for a while. Still, I was not so stunned by it, and I do not feel it was unique enough to warrant five stars. Sure it was original; it had some great ideas, but... Plus, the last chapter was, in some ways, too much of a stretch, plus creepy and weird in some ways. The main male protagonist had his weaknesses. Sure, his determination was incredible, his sense of duty was great, and his drive to become a Melos Warrior was admirable, even though there were at least three scenes where I had half a mind to punch myself in the face and to scream, "what a f*cking prick!". This is because I am a normal guy, and I do not think I will ever understand some things. So my final impression is around 8/10, and I am glad I spent a day watching this anime series because it was quite refreshing in the heat. ()
