At nineteen, Annie Parker (Samantha Morton) has lost her father unexpectedly and her mother and older sister to breast cancer. Although happily married to Paul (Aaron Paul) and expecting her first child, something just isn't quite right. Filled with trepidation, she visits the doctor and as her world is shattered all over again, Annie decides to fight her cancer diagnosis and defy history from repeating itself. Meanwhile, miles away, brilliant research scientist Mary-Claire King (Helen Hunt) is embarking on a tough but revolutionary journey to prove that some cancers have a genetic link and, in doing so, bring medicine one step closer to defeating the disease. As both women's lives wind inexorably together, discoveries are made which traverse the realm of science as hope, love and survival become beacons in the darkest days of their toughest battles. Based on an incredible true story and with an all-star cast including Maggie Grace, Rashida Jones, Alice Eve and Bradley Whitford, Decoding Annie Parker explores how two women came together to save a life and change the world. A pretty strong story that, despite its theme, tries to blend drama with comedic elements, although by the end, any comedy completely disappears from the narrative. At times, it may seem like emotional manipulation, but the fact that it's a true story makes it very powerful. Decoding Annie Parker didn't overwhelm me, but it definitely intrigued me. ()
