What We Do in the Shadows is a documentary-style look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of three vampires who've "lived" together for hundreds of years. In Staten Island. The self-appointed leader of the group is "Nandor The Relentless", a great warrior and conqueror from the Ottoman Empire. Then there's the British vampire "Laszlo" – a bit of a rogue and a dandy and a fop, he might say. And then there's "Nadja": the seductress, the temptress, the vampiric Bonnie to Laszlo's Clyde. After an unexpected visit from their dark lord and leader, "Baron Afanas," the vampires are reminded of what they were initially tasked with upon their arrival in Staten Island over a hundred years ago – total and complete domination of the New World. But what exactly is the best way to go about achieving said domination? (HBO Europe)

Season 1: Taika, I love you. There hasn't been a better idea in a long time than to make a series based on What We Do in the Shadows. New Zealand humor really knows no boundaries here and I always die of laughter. Each episode is a beautiful 20 minutes long, so the time commitment is minimal. The quality improves with each episode and I really can't wait to see what other absurdities await us in the second season. In Season 2, the first three episodes were uncertain and worrisome about the quality. Although Taika tries to incorporate as many new elements as possible and entertain the viewer in all directions, at the beginning it lacked the wit and there was a noticeable effort to come up with something fresh. In the second season, it is easier to distinguish stronger episodes from weaker ones, but overall this series is still terribly great and sometimes I even felt more engaged than in the first one, so the imbalance is definitely more noticeable here, but Taika is able to compensate for it twice as much. The humor is just top-notch, and it would still need at least one more season if it maintains a similar pace. Season 3 basically has the same problem as the second season, where it was also occasionally evident that some episodes were weaker than others, however, overall it is still without disappointment, and I always get annoyed that the season ends too quickly. The humor may occasionally slacken, but the creators again try to cover the weaker spots with new episodic characters, adding diversity and vibrancy to each episode. I don't know if it's a full five stars again, but I'll probably reserve judgment for the case of future seasons. Season 4 starts promisingly again, but this series will always have the same problem of occasional exhaustion. Sometimes an episode is successful and I laugh, sometimes it just passes by and I'm not even sure if I laughed. Nadja's character keeps increasing the decibels, but this source of humor is getting a bit worn out for me. It simply depends on each individual episode. The second half seemed slightly uninspiring to me. The doors are, of course, open for the fifth season, and if Guillermo actually becomes a vampire, we'll see where the story goes. For me, it should slowly be coming to an end. ()
It's hard to find a better, funnier, more relaxed series. What We Do in the Shadows is definitely the best I've ever seen. It doesn't have a bad episode, there's an overabundance of humour in every one, a witty story and a great plot, the cast is without question the best, the European accent of the English only adds to the fun and at the same time it's better understood than the American English. I have nothing to complain about and I’m diving into the third season. ()
Just as excellent as the eponymous film. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi chose actors who were simply perfect for those vampires. In addition, I was happy about the appearance of Matt Berry, who enjoyed his role just as much as the one in the legendary IT Crowd. Watching a documentary from the world of contemporary vampires and seeing how their old habits clash with our society is simply a must. Impossibly funny and a total chillout. I haven’t seen such an entertaining series in a long while… hurray for What We Do in the Shadows! ()
Five stars without hesitation, this series is great just like its older movie namesake, which it even surpasses in some ways. Because of what? The energetic vampire Colin, that's for sure! ()
