Rasmus, a boy of nine, lives in an orphanage. His life is not too bad, but like the other children he has a dream: to find his own parents one day. Now and then a childless couple turns up, but they always pick a curly-headed girl and leave all the straight-haired boys behind. Rasmus gets tired of waiting and runs away to look for some parents, preferably beautiful and rich. The very first morning he comes across Oskar, a vagabond. They wake up in the same barn and Rasmus talks Oskar into taking him along until he has found his mother and father. They have a marvelous time together, both exciting and enjoyable.
