When a live TV news crew broadcasts an embarrassing defeat of Hong Kong's police department by just five bank robbers, public opinion of the force plummets and the department vows to capture the robbers at any cost. Detective Cheung (Nick Cheung) accidentally stumbles upon the fugitives hiding out in an abandoned building, and soon Yuen (Richie Jen), the notorious leader of the five-man gang, finds himself and his crew under siege by thousands of police officers. Seeing this as an opportunity to restore the public's faith in the police department, Inspector Rebecca (Kelly Chen) turns the stakeout into a breaking news show, with live updates beamed out to a transfixed Hong Kong. But the plan may backfire when attempts to manage the press come undone as hostages are taken, true identities are unknown, and the building contains not one gang but two... Too bad this didn't work for me. It's certainly not an action flick, the action scenes are minimal and consist only of shootouts that are neither bloody nor thrilling, and you have to sit through the dense running time before getting there. I was not interested in the plot at all, although it is not stupid or naive. It's more like a crime drama. Boring! 45% ()
The comic theme of trying to popularize the shitty image of the Hong Kong police through the media is riddled with myriads of ammo. Action alternates with more action, things go bang here and there, completely calm criminals dine with their hostages, and I'm left wondering from the opening few minutes why I so rarely see something so directorially assured yet charmingly dynamic and explosive. It's badass. ()
