English John Carney is always a safe bet if you’re in the mood for a life drama with a strong musical element. He’s delivered gems like Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street. Sadly, Flora and Son doesn’t quite hit the same high notes. It’s a bit of a letdown, especially since it’s set in Dublin, a city teeming with great musicians. The premise is classic Carney — heartfelt and relatable. The scenes where Joseph Gordon-Levitt teaches Eve Hewson’s character to play guitar are charming, especially when he appears right in front of her from the screen. However, Eve’s portrayal of Flora as a perpetually wine-soaked mess didn’t quite resonate with me. Plus, the music didn’t have the same impact as in his other films. When the music in a musical film doesn’t hit the mark, it’s tough for the movie to shine. ()
