3 couples go to Ireland woods to collect magic mushrooms and trip out. On their way they meet some strange inhabitants of the woods and it doesn't take long until a creepy story is being told at the campfire which might be more than just a story. So strange things happen, people start disappearing, silhouettes move through the woods and the creepy story starts to melt into reality. The horror kicks in along with the effect of the mushrooms. A decent genre film set in the distant Irish forests, from which even Rumcajs himself would probably have his butt clenched. The forefront here is truly the atmosphere of misty and inaccessible forests, which elevates the overall level to a better genre average. Unfortunately, the epileptic editing harms it, and most of the characters are mostly completely dimwitted (entertaining only occasionally). Thumbs up for the damned cow that talks and can wish you "have a nice day" :) [55%] ()
In spite of its appalling and messy script, Shrooms is fairly well made and atmospheric. It’s very confusing in the second half, with moments when I didn’t know what was going on. That might be warranted given that the the heroes are suffering hallucinations, but when you know less than the characters themselves, that’s too much. The twist is quite predictable considering the course of the story, and also very unoriginal. Shrooms had a lot of potential, if the creators had been a bit more daring and made a film that would be worthy of its name, it could have resulted in something more than an average teenage-slasher. Quite good little horror flick. The setting of foggy and inhospitable woods works perfectly and the atmosphere is so thick in places that you could cut it. Unfortunately, the film desperately lacks more skilful direction, which would have added some ideas and thought instead of only endless chases through the woods and a bunch of mostly unsuccessful jump-scares. Shrooms is terribly marred by its complete inability to tell even the simplest and most played-out story smoothly, and then by the awfully chaotic editing of the horror scenes that subject us to flashback sequences of a few images and we never get to see the murders themselves. If it wasn’t for that, this could have been the best teen slasher in recent years; this way it's nothing but average, heavily missing the untapped potential that those little stinking mushrooms undoubtedly have...) Yeah, and I’d rather not speak about that final shocking twist. ()
