This powerful follow-up to HBO's Emmy®-winning The Gathering Storm follows Prime Minister Winston Churchill as he guides his beleaguered nation through the crucible of the war years of 1940-1945. As England struggles through early defeats in World War II, it is Churchill who remains steadfast, keeping spirits up with inspiring speeches, leading his nation wisely in a coalition government with his political opponents, and adjusting to the harsh realities of modern warfare. Under Churchill, England keeps the fight for freedom going against Nazi Germany even as France surrenders, and eventually the tide turns via English persistence and America's entrance into the war. Churchill and U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt become friends and allies, but their bond is tested by the ambitions of the third member of the "Big Three," Joseph Stalin. Also tested is Churchill's marriage to his wife Clemmie, who is devoted to Winston but exasperated by his emotional limitations. After the war is won, Churchill finds his political power slipping away, along with the ideals he cherished. Chastened by Clemmie for his petulance, Churchill ends up taking steps to repair the rift in his marriage, and learns to bask in the post-war adoration of a grateful nation. Churchill is a name that carries so much weight. Usually, not even a storm could stop him. But in this case, it didn’t take much for the whole film to go off the rails... ()
Finally, something worth watching. A well-crafted, digestible historical drama centered on one of the key figures in (not just) British history. 80%. ()
