When Sophie Malaterre (Karine Vanasse) is introduced to switch.com by a new friend, she thinks the holiday-home swapping website will be the perfect way to liven up a dull summer. But soon after she arrives at her new apartment in Paris, she realises she made the biggest mistake of her life. A murdered man is found in the guest bedroom, and when Detective Forgeat (Eric Cantona) takes Sophie in for questioning - she finds out she hasn't just swapped houses, she's switched identities. In an attempt to prove her innocence, she goes on the run and it's up to Detective Forgeat to find Sophie before she too turns up dead. But things don't go to plan and, when the body count starts piling up, Forgeat finds himself getting in over his head and operating outside of the law in a bid to save Sophie and hunt down the real killer. The last third of Switch is overly contrived. The wrongfully accused on the lam and the main cop are not as stellar and charismatic as we’re used to from similar French genre films. Because of this, and for some less-than-believable situations, the film cannot equal the best American thrillers. But as a way to kill some time, it’ll keep you entertained. It maintains the mystery surrounding the main villain long enough and at least one scene will stick in your memory (the chase in the mansion neighborhood). ()
Not too long ago, I caught a segment on TV about how Eric Cantona was diving into the world of acting, trying to make a name for himself on the big screen. As soon as I heard about his latest film Switch, I was eager to see it, but never really had the chance—until HBO added it to their lineup. I was super excited going in, but in the end, I didn’t feel either disappointed or thrilled. Switch is just…average. It's not an action movie, as you might expect, but more of a typical French crime thriller. There are some solid scenes, but also a few dull moments. The characters are decent, and I actually liked Cantona in the film, but that’s about it. The ending, though, felt way too rushed. They wrapped things up so quickly, it was like watching a bouncy ball hit the ground—fast and chaotic. ()
