Kings of Nowhere

The film's opening scene shows a man on the motorboat ruffling a serene surface, which every now and then reveals the ruins of abandoned, inundated houses. This ghostly landscape inspires silent awe. In 2009 the Picachos dam was completed on the Presidio River in northwestern Mexico. Half a dozen towns were flooded in the process and thousands of residents had to abandon their homes. This was also to be the fate of the colonial town of San Marcos, only it did not quite happen. Most of the town was submerged and almost all of the residents left; all but three families, that is: Pani and Paula who stubbornly refuse to close their tortilleria and spend their spare time preventing the town from turning into a complete ruin; Miro and his parents who dream of leaving but have become stuck in the trap of living; and finally, Yoya and Jaime who live in fear, especially during power outages, but do not really complain as there is no one to complain to and they have everything they could ever wish for.
