This dark, early film noir reenactment of the French Revolution begins when Charles D'Aubigny (Robert Cummings) is commissioned by a political interest group to secure a little black book allegedly containing evidence that revolutionary Robespierre (Richard Basehart) is working for personal gain rather than in the interest of the newly formed Republic. Robespierre has been holding unfair trials and having his rivals executed - all part of a plan to spark a dictatorship. To ingratiate himself with the crooked politician, D'Aubigny becomes one of Robespierre's most trusted allies. But as D'Aubigny soon finds out, none of the men closest to Robespierre are out to help anyone but themselves, resulting in a slew of back stabbings. Every attempt to secure the book that will expose Robespierre's dirty deeds is fraught with wild goose chases and close calls - and if D'Aubigny gets caught, he's done for.
