Who cares who killed Sara! I'm not at all happy with Netflix on this one. In a Mexico-thriller-mystery connection, one expects Mexican cartels, people trafficking, torture, murder, drugs, but hey, this is a soft soap opera from Mexico that is pure drama, and literally nothing interesting happens there for the entire series. In the first episode it's still alright, a guy gets out of prison after 18 years and decides to get revenge on the family that put him there. You'd expect him that after 18 years, he would have come with an insane plan like the the Professor in Money Heist in 18 years, but here he can't do more than threaten. By the end of the series, I was vainly hoping that at least half the people would be dead, but that was me being overly optimistic. This is a classic melodrama, dealing with family relationships, who's sleeping with whom and who's cheating on whom. The only thing I liked are the numerous erotic scenes, that's also the only thing that the creators managed to impress me with, except the central gay couple, who are perhaps there more often than the main character 😃 In terms of script, I found it weak (Mexico is not Spain after all), the characters didn't stick to my heart, there's annoying flashbacks every five minutes, and I had trouble figuring out which character it was, and since there's nothing going on that interested me, the fun went by the wayside. After five episodes I was hesitant to finish the series and I would have done better to give up then. The biggest indignity is that what you wait seven hours for the creators to leave the door open for a possible second season, and I won't be there. Women and soap opera or drama lovers might be satisfied, I'll have to go watch samurai and ninjas now to fix my mood. This was a downright waste of time. 4/10. ()
This gem from Mexico, from completely unknown creators and actors, is clearly the best thing to come out of not only Netflix, but possibly all of cinema in a long time. What initially starts out as a banality, and thus an attempt to prove a murder, gradually morphs into an intense and gripping spectacle reaching biblical proportions, and I'm as excited as I've ever been. The way the series is presented, retrospective narration of events and memories plus present day events putting together the final picture, is damn engaging, each episode holds its own standard and each one delivers a pivotal moment leading to the final denouement. The characters are likable, well acted, and each evolves over the course of the series from innocent human to insanely ugly bastard with their own twisted secret. Over the course of the series, you will come up with hundreds of theories as to how, what, who, and why, but the final twist with the DEFINITELY BEST CLIFFHANGER shakes everything up and if they don't give me a second season right away, I'm going to go crazy. I consider the eighth episode to be the highlight of any series, and not only there, but throughout I was tense, had goosebumps, and played the next episode and the next like a drug. An indescribable series and I'm already putting it at the top of my entire list and I'd happily watch the first season again right now because nothing has evoked such emotions in me before. ()
