"The sooner God takes us to Him, the less sin we will commit." Here, Refn likely found one of his inspirations for Only God Forgives. An absurd fragment overflowing with the endless agony of both the regime and society. In a country of poverty, ruin, booze, and grand literary works about poverty, ruin, and booze. In a country where tomorrow would mean yesterday if today weren’t last year. I was struck by the scene where the Il-76 was unloading a two-hundred-ton cargo while soldiers were rushing into its tailpipe. I assume with cropped hair.

Like The 51st State, but the Russian way. It’s hard to say what it is about, or if it is about anything, but it was stylish as few other things. That deserves praise.

Too Russian for my taste. Form a purely objective perspective, there’s not much I can criticise, but it just didn’t work on me – from the language to the completely different mentality.
