Dreieinhalb. ()
I like British comedies, and I definitely have nothing against them. Moreover, comedies about a group of young guys wanting to lose their virginity, or in this case, their freedom, have been quite common lately, including in terms of quality. A relatively recent example is The Inbetweeners, which incredibly entertained me because its humor went into the absurd, crossing certain boundaries in a way that made you laugh. Or you might leave feeling disgusted. I was among those who laughed. In the case of A Few Best Men, the feelings are more mixed, even though The Inbetweeners didn’t leave as strong an impression as I expected. A Few Best Men suffers from moments of sheer boredom. Perhaps it’s because the creators tried to introduce us to the new Australian setting, or more likely, it’s because they attempted to find all possible plot lines. Ultimately, the funniest storyline is the one involving the ram, which is genuinely brilliantly insane and has excellent build-up. The romantic story is rather in the background, and I admit I didn’t really care how the couple would end up. Once again, I connected more with the group, even though they are just a bunch of real losers. Just looking at them gives that impression. I don’t know if you’ll be rooting for all of them, but they might amuse you at times. It’s a pity that it’s only at times. A pleasant surprise is the cameo character played by Olivia Newton-John. At her age, she still looks great, and she can poke fun at herself. And one more thing I must highlight is definitely the musical score. ()
I would say that as every country has its guilty pleasures when it comes to comedies, Australia has its A Few Best Men. It was a great flick for me. ()
