A huge disappointment. Although I'm used to Mark Wahlberg starring in rather poor films lately, this was something I didn’t expect in the least. I don’t think I have ever been under such a powerful attack of various clichés, with nowhere to hide because everything was subsequently flooded by a tsunami of pathos. The comedy was weak, but what the authors succeeded in was sappy melodrama, hence my rating. ()
Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne are a pair of actors I’m very happy to see in movies. And when they are cast as leads in a chill-out family comedy, I cannot be dissatisfied. A naturally flowing fun, an interesting premise that is well conveyed, no vulgarity. I see no reason to rate this with less than four stars. ()
Sean Anders is like on a seesaw. When he has a more bearable subject, he can squeeze something more out of it and sometimes shoot a total crap (Sex Drive). On the other hand, I am interested in his films because he makes comedies and there are fewer and fewer of them, at least in theaters, and humor is more transforming into blockbusters. And actually, I am surprised that his latest piece has such a high rating, I was terribly bored. From the two parts of Daddy's Home, Anders pulled Wahlberg, which is the only positive of the film, and both collaborations mentioned are at least a step higher for me. The film almost stayed under my radar and surprisingly nothing would have happened at all..4/10 PS: I have been convinced that Rose Byrne is a terribly bad actress and won't be particularly smart. In Neighbors, she seemed completely out of place to me, but I thought it was an exception because she was fine in X-Men...but she isn't, it's more those X-Men. ()
A lesser-known feel-good comedy, in which I'm glad to see Mark Wahlberg after a long time. The subject matter is simple and not that original, but it delivers a lot of funny scenes and it's a good laugh. What makes the movie above average compared to its competitors is that it doesn't fall into boring family drama and emotionally escalated scenes after the halfway point, but sticks to the humor and the plot. The ending is unexpectedly happy, but with a pretty decent emotional touch that moved even me. In short, a solid and slightly above average comedy with likable characters and lots of jokes. ()
Well, that was good. This low-key comedy with a not-so-great marketing campaign is finally the hit of the spring and Mark Wahlberg scores more points. A husband and wife decide to adopt a child, but end up adopting three rebels, including 15-year-old Isabel Moner, the quintessential sassy out-of-control teen. Laughter literally alternates with crying, and it's very pretty to watch. 80%. ()
