If you’re looking for a technically solid horror movie about pretty people that get naked in nature and get butchered by a monster, devoid of artistic ambitions or surprises, which simply delivers what you expect from it, then Animal is a pretty good choice. Terror it won’t cause, unpleasant tension, rather. The jump-scares are cheap but effective. If we compare it with Creature, Animal is a miracle, basically. So, given the possibilities and the competition, it’s fine. In the immediate uncritical feeling, I’m almost tempted to slap it with an above-average fourth star, I had good fun. ()
Animal is, at first glance, a textbook example of a monster movie in which a bunch of diverse people in a relatively remote location have to deal with some creature that came from God knows where. On the plus side, this film didn't have too many annoying characters to get on your nerves, and even the writers were diverse in terms of gender, skin color, and orientation. Still, there was a bit of a lack of justification as to where the creatures actually came from. Aside from that, I was also a bit puzzled (SPOILER!) that almost no one dies in the first hour of the film, while in the last quarter of an hour almost the entire cast loses their lives, which is not to say that there should be one death every ten minutes, but it seemed like they had nothing left to film at the end, so they killed off almost everyone (END SPOILER!). A pretty pleasant flick. I like monster horror movies and there aren’t many of them nowadays, that's why Animal should be appreciated. It's well made, the monster pays homage to the old classics, it's quite brisk and you don’t get bored, it can be recommended. 60% ()
If you're okay with not expecting anything groundbreaking from the movie Animal- and you won't - you'll realize that this is really something that suits you, a ride from start to finish, nothing unnecessarily dragged out, and that some scenes cater mainly to the viewer and the effect they're meant to evoke. I had fun, which in this case was enough to satisfy me. ()
