Hell High (1989)
A very late slasher in which the killing unfortunately comes too... very late. And all without surprises.
Trap (2024)
M. Night Shyamalan always comes up with an interesting and appealing premise, but one that I would love to see in the hands of a filmmaker other than himself. The Trap, while by far the best of his films in recent years, comes out with the best marks, still really pisses me off with its shorthand and illogical nonsense. The script here in particular relies on sheer coincidence and randomness perhaps like no other. I'll leave one thing to it though, Josh Hartnett absolutely relishes his juicy role here, and because of him, the viewer does too.
The Retirement Plan (2023)
Worst Nicolas Cage movie I've ever seen. I usually like his non-Hollywood indies of the last few years, because they are always at least interesting, but this one is not interesting in any way. The Retirement Plan comes across as a patchwork of sequences with no unifying tone, style, or perhaps even creative intent. Tim Brown doesn't seem to know what he's making, or that he's supposed to be making anything at all. He takes a favourite fast-edit sequence from Guy Ritchie, he tries for a futile seaside soap opera, a multi-layered thriller full of surprises, and a would-be buddy movie comedy. How someone with such negative talent value gets such an ensemble cast is beyond me.

KVIFF 2024: Závěrem
58. ročník Mezinárodního filmového festivalu Karlovy Vary je u konce. Závěrečný ceremoniál proběhl, ceny byly rozdány (jako jeden z mála jsem dokonce vítězný snímek viděl), agentská sekce se uzavírá a já si pomalu balím kufry na cestu zpět z Karlových Varů. Každopádně ve finálním deníčkovém příspěvku je asi ideální čas na pár statistik a shrnutí.
Absolvovaných projekcí a recenzovaných filmů: 27 (v průměru 3 na 1 festivalový den). Napsaných deníčkových příspěvků: 10 (k tomu 8 novinkových textů ať už o festivalu, či nikoliv). Absolvovaných KVIFF Talků: 1. Nachozených kilometrů: hodně. Naspaných hodin: málo. Kinosály, ve kterých jsem letos nebyl: Kinosál A a C, Kino Drahomíra, Kino Čas (ne, že bych nechtěl, ale zkrátka to tak vyšlo).
A jaká je trojice mých nejlepších filmových zážitků z letošního KVIFFu? Vzestupně od třetího místa k prvnímu:
3) Mord (r. Adam Martinec)
2) Jiný člověk (r. Aaron Schimberg)
1) Substance (r. Coralie Fargeat)
Děkuju všem kolegům, přátelům a letošním ČSFD agentům za vynikající společnost a řadu konverzací o filmu, nebo o čemkoliv jiném. Stálo to za to a už teď se těším na ročník s číslovkou 59. Tak na viděnou!
