Having escaped from her stressful life in the city, 30-year-old Nat holes up in the small village of La Escapa, in deepest rural Spain. In a rundown country house, with a crochety stray dog, the young girl will try to put her life back on track. Having dealt with her landlord’s hostility and the mistrust of the village locals, Nat finds herself accepting a disturbing sexual proposal made by her neighbour Andreas. This strange and confusing encounter will give rise to an all-consuming and obsessive passion that will completely engulf Nat and make her question the kind of woman she thinks she is. San Sebastian Film Festival: Film Number 11. "Lots of nuns smoke and lots of whores pray"... I have awaited a five-star film and would really like it to win the main prize. The title gives the slightly misleading impression that it is a film about love, but as Isabel Coixet said at the press conference, her film is more of a punch in the gut. I would call it a film about what one woman can endure without losing her mind. Excellent and breathtaking from beginning to end, even in the numerous details. The gentle and tender Nat versus the inhospitable house with a hateful landlord, a foreign environment somewhere in La Rioja, a neglected and tormented dog as an unwanted gift, and then a guy nicknamed "The German" with an "offer she can't refuse". The greatest film experience in San Sebastian with all its beauty, tenderness, passion, pain, despair, and hope. Mads Mikkelsen faced strong competition over that final dance scene with Laia Costa. ()
