The film is a sequel to the Emigrants. It tells the story of how Karl-Oskar and Kristina build their cabin, get their first cow, meet Indians, have several children, work hard, acquire neighbours, and numerous other aspects of settling. Karl-Oskar is a farmer and the Nilssons settle where there is plenty of land. Robert Nilsson, Karl-Oskar´s younger brother who is somewhat of a dreamer, has hopes of real wealth and a desire to be a part of American society. Hopes of finding gold in California drive him to go West. He makes the journey with Arvid, a farmhand who was very much of an outcast in Sweden. Troell has chosen to tell Robert´s tragic and dramatic tale in the form of daydream memories. The scenes of Robert and Arvid wandering in desperation across the desert, their search for water after drinking poisonous water form a masterpiece of horror and power. (forgalmazó hivatalos szövege)
